What is labyrinthitis?

Labyrinthitis is inflammation of the ear the inside that can cause dizziness. Keep in mind, that in the ear there is a structure called a maze that helps regulate balance. If the labyrinth becomes irritated, the labyrinth sends the wrong signal to the brain. Labyrinthitis may often be associated with conditions of hearing loss, vertigo (spinning sensation), loss of balance, and nausea.

How common is this condition?

Labyrinthitis is a condition that generally attacks more women than men. Labyrinthitis can also affect patients at any age. The disease can be overcome by reducing risk factors. Discuss with your doctor for more information.

Signs & Symptoms

What are the signs & symptoms of labyrinthitis?

Symptoms may appear suddenly, usually alternating, and last for less than a minute to several hours or days. People can suffer vertigo, which usually gets worse by changing positions quickly. Other symptoms include dizziness, feeling unsteady, loss of balance, nausea, ringing in the ears, fatigue, and feeling sick. Vomiting may occur. Hearing slowly becomes normal in most people, usually within 2 weeks.

Some other symptoms or signs may not be listed above. If you feel anxious about these symptoms, consult your doctor immediately.

If you have any of the above signs or symptoms or headaches, fever, or stiffness, neck pain with your symptoms, consult your doctor. Each body acts differently from each other. Discuss with your doctor to find the best solution in the situation you are experiencing.

What causes labyrinthitis?

Labyrinthitis is a condition that is often caused by a viral infection. Another less common cause is bacterial infection. Most causes are not very clear.

Risk factors

What increases the risk of labyrinthitis?

There are many risk factors that cause labyrinthitis, which are:

  • Drinking too much alcohol.
  • Fatigue
  • History of allergies
  • Just suffering from a disease caused by a virus, respiratory disease, or ear infection
  • Smoke.
  • Stress.

The information provided is not a substitute for medical advice. ALWAYS consult your doctor.

What are the treatment options for labyrinthitis?

Labyrinthitis is a condition that usually resolves on its own, usually within a few days to 2 weeks. For severe dizziness the doctor may give meclizine. Lying with your eyes closed in a dark room will help cure severe pain or dizziness. Change position, like getting up from lying down, slowly.

Head movements, called Epley maneuvers, can be a solution to help relieve dizziness. It's important to drink lots of water or other liquids, because dehydration can worsen the symptoms of labyrinthitis.

Antibiotics cannot help, because most cases of labyrinthitis are not caused by bacterial infections. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics only if you suspect a bacterial infection.

What are the most common labyrinthitis tests?

The doctor makes a diagnosis of symptoms and examinations (especially the eyes, ears, nose, and throat). A slightly reddened nose or throat can occur due to a viral infection. Sometimes, the doctor may do special tests for other symptoms such as hearing loss. Your doctor may recommend visiting ear, nose and throat (ENT) or neurological specialists (nervous system diseases specialist). X-rays and laboratory tests are usually not needed.

Home remedies

What are some lifestyle changes or home remedies that can be done to treat labyrinthitis (Labyrinthitis)?

Labyrinthitis is a condition that can be prevented and treated with a number of lifestyle changes. Are as follows:

  • Sit or lie down if you feel dizzy
  • Tell your doctor if your symptoms get worse
  • Drink plenty of fluids

If you have questions, consult your doctor for the best solution for your problem.
