Chokeberry is native to eastern North America and are often found growing in swamps or damp woodlands. The hardy chokeberry shrub reaches about 2-4 meters in height and withstands salt and swampy conditions. The plant produces very bitter dark purple fruit clusters that are often used in jam and wine making. Chokeberries have been an important and integral part of the native Indian diet for hundreds of years.

Chokeberry fruit juice and anthocyanins derived from the fruits have been studied intensively, particularly in Bulgaria and eastern Europe. Chokeberry appears to have compounds that are protective to the liver, have blood sugar stabilizing properties, anti-tumor, and have anti-inflammatory activity.

Chokeberry contains a high concentration of flavonoids and antioxidants. Chokeberry berries are full of flavonoids, trace minerals and phenolic phytochemicals, including anthocyanins, of which it contains one of the highest of any known plant (several times higher than cranberry juice). Some of these specific substances include cyanidin-3-galactoside, epicatechin, quercetin, caffeic acid, delphinidin, malvidin, petunidin, pelargonidin, and peonidin.

Chokeberry or known as Aronia is a small berry that have color of dark blue. fresh aronia berries are usually used to create juice, jam, syrup, and wine.

Dried aronia berries,  are usually consumed as a healthy snack, added to breakfast food, or used in baked goodies. Dried aronia berries are also used to create antioxidant-rich herb tea.

Aronia is a excellent medicinal herb and also the North american Indians used it in feeding as an addition to bread. more importantly, fresh fruits are most frequently used as a cure for stomach and Aronia tea for healing wounds.

It is also important to mention that aronia regulates proper operation and excretion of thyroid hormones, as well as to regulate the work of the pancreas, and may be helpful in the treatment of diabetes (type II diabetes mellitus).

The main active ingredients of chokeberry melanocarpa fruit are phenolic substances, mainly flavonoids from the anthocyanin subclass. And as such chokeberry tea could also be useful in blood sugar management and reduction of cardiovascular risk factors.

The amount of dietary fiber, vitamins and minerals contained in chokeberries is high compared to the calorie, carbohydrate and fat content.
