Is Salmon Salmon Really Helpful for Skin Health?

Salmon meat is healthy to eat because it contains omega-3 fatty acids, protein, vitamin B, and also antioxidants that are good for the body as a whole. But in the world of beauty, the trend of injecting or applying a cream containing salmon DNA, he said good for preventing aging and healing wounds on the skin. Is it true?

Benefits of salmon DNA for skin health

Quoted from the Huffington Post, DNA contained in the sperm of salmon is believed to be beneficial for both skin health and beauty.

Dr. Rachel Nazarian of the Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York later stated that there were indeed several scientific facts that supported the theory.

First is a research published by the International Journal of Cosmetic Science in 2010. the study reported a cream containing 3% salmon sperm DNA thickens and moisturizes the facial skin of 90% of participating men after 12 weeks of regular application. The men's skin had looked very rough and dry. The research team found that salmon sperm DNA works to stimulate the production of hyaluronic acid (hyaluronic acid) in connective tissue cells of the skin.

The second evidence comes from more recent research, published in the journal Archives of Craniofacial Surgery in 2018. This research states cream containing DNA from salmon sperm helps burns on the skin of rats heal faster, than when smeared with saline liquid or other burn drugs.

The results of the study showed salmon's DNA cream helped accelerate wound healing by increasing the formation of blood vessels and blood flow to the skin.

Finally according to Dr. Nazarian, skincare products that contain salmon DNA sperm are often recommended to be used to restore the skin after certain ablative laser treatments.

So is it true that salmon DNA is beneficial for the skin?

Although salmon DNA is considered potentially good for the skin, mAsih needs evidence from wider research to ascertain its benefits. The current research is limited to testing small groups of humans, animal experiments, or skin cell cultures.

Dr. Samer Jaber, a dermatologist from Washington Square Dermatology, still doubts that the benefits of salmon DNA are truly effective in preventing skin aging. Jaber argues that existing research only proves the benefits of salmon DNA for improve skin elasticity, not prevent premature aging. He continued, basically the most important thing that can prevent premature aging is still won by diligently applying sunscreen to the skin.

Meanwhile, some experts argue that the goodness of salmon for the skin most potentially comes from the content of omega 3 acids and its vitamin D. Human skin basically has a layer of natural oil at the very top to protect itself from dryness.

Well, your intake of omega 3 fatty acids is known to be able helps skin retain moisture and stay hydrated. Omega-3 fatty acids have been proven to prevent collagen damage and skin elasticity, which can make you look younger.

Besides that, Dr. Melda Isaac, a dermatologist in Washington, DC, also said that vitamin D from salmon has a photoprotective effect. That is, intake of vitamin D can help protect the skin against the negative effects of UV radiation.

The benefits of vitamin D in salmon meat is also good for growth, repair, and helps protect the skin from exposure to free radicals.
