What is Amlodipine used for?

Amlodipine is a calcium channel blockers drug to reduce high blood pressure. The medicine for hypertension works by entering certain tissues and arteries. Then it flows to the heart so it works very effectively to lower blood pressure.

The usual adult dose for hypertension

Initial dose: 5 mg orally once a day

Maintenance dose: 5-10 mg orally once a day. Vulnerable patients can be started on 2.5 mg orally once a day.

The usual adult dose for angina pectoris

Stable chronic or vasospastic angina, or documented angiographic coronary artery disease in patients without heart failure or ejection fraction less than 40%:

5-10 mg orally once a day. Most patients with stable angina or chronic vasospastic need 10 mg for adequate effects. In clinical studies, most patients with coronary artery disease need 10 mg.

Stable chronic or vasospastic angina, or documented angiographic coronary artery disease in patients without heart failure or ejection fraction less than 40%:

5-10 mg orally once a day. Most patients with stable angina or chronic vasospastic need 10 mg for adequate effects. In clinical studies, most patients with coronary artery disease need 10 mg.

What is the dose of Amlodipine for children?

The usual children's dose for hypertension

6-17 years: 2.5-5 mg orally once a day. Note: Doses of more than 5 mg daily have not been studied in pediatric patients.

In what dosages and preparations is Amlodipine available?

This drug is only available in tablet form, including doses of 2.5 mg, 5 mg, and 10 mg. so you need a glass of water to swallow easily. If you cannot take this medicine, consult your doctor about other easy ways to take medicine.

Side effects

What side effects might occur due to Amlodipine?

Generally these high blood pressure-lowering drugs cause drowsiness. This is the mildest side effect. Stop using amlodipine and contact your doctor if you have any of the following serious side effects:

  • Swelling in the hands, ankles or feet
  • Palpitations or fluttering in the chest; or
  • Chest pain or severe feeling, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, general feeling of pain

Less serious amlodipine side effects may include:

  • Headache
  • Dizzy, sleepy
  • Feeling tired
  • Stomach ache; or
  • Flushing (warmth, redness on the skin, or tingling sensations)
  • Lost consciousness

Not everyone experiences the following side effects. There may be some side effects not mentioned above. If you have concerns about certain side effects, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

If you are taking antihypertensive drugs for the first time or increasing the dose and feeling chest pain is getting worse, you are likely to have a heart attack. Stop using it immediately if you experience this. In addition to chest pain, other heart attack symptoms that you should be aware of include:

  • Hard to breathe
  • Upper body aches and aches
  • The body feels tired and continues to sweat cold
  • Nausea and dizziness

Liver disease

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you forget one dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. But when it is nearing the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to the usual dosage schedule. Do not double the dose without the knowledge of the doctor.

What rules do you need to obey when using Amlodipine?

Use medication as directed

Amlodipine oral tablets are used for long-term treatment. However, it will pose a serious risk if you use it without supervision from a doctor.
