What medicine does Carglumic Acid have? – A-Z Medicine

Generic Name:
Carglumic Acid

carglumic acid.

What is carglumic acid for?

Carglumic Acid or carglumic acid is a form of a man-made enzyme that occurs naturally in the liver. This enzyme is needed to process the excess nitrogen produced when the body metabolizes protein. Without this enzyme, nitrogen builds up in the form of ammonia and is not released from the body. Ammonia is very toxic when it circulates in the blood and tissues and can cause permanent brain damage, coma, or death.

Carcglumic acid is an enzyme used to treat hyperammonemia. This condition occurs due to urea cycle disorders caused by a lack of certain liver enzymes. Carglumic Acid is usually given with other drugs to treat this lifelong disorder.

Carglumic Acid can also be used for purposes not listed in the treatment guidelines.

How to use Carglumic Acid?

  • By dissolving and drinking

Carglumic acid is a drug that is usually taken 2 to 4 times every day, right before eating. Follow the doctor's instructions for more complete drinking rules.

Also note not to chew, crush, or swallow whole carglumic acid tablets. Generally carglumic acid is used by placing it in a glass of water until the tablet dissolves in water.

Carglumic acid tablets usually will not dissolve completely. Therefore, it is recommended to drink this solution immediately. To make sure you get the entire dose, add less liquid to the same glass, stir a little and drink immediately if there are still remaining tablets left in the glass.

Carglumic acid can be used with a syringe as follows: Place 200 milligrams of a tablet on the syringe and take 2.5 milliliters of water onto the syringe. Shake until the tablet is spread and then pour the syringe into your mouth. Refill the syringe with water, shake gently, and pour it into your mouth.

Carglumic acid tablets can also be given via (NG) nasogastric filling tubes as follows: Dissolve the tablets in the syringe as directed above. Place the syringe into the NG tube and push the plunger down to pour the syringe into the tube. Then flush the tube with more water to wash the contents at the bottom.

To make sure this medicine helps your condition and does not cause harmful effects, your blood needs to be tested more often. An ammonia buildup in the blood can quickly cause brain injury or death. Don't miss any follow-up visits to your doctor for blood tests. Everyone with urea cycle disorders must remain under the care of a doctor.
